Lore & Background

Inkwell Isle Three is the setting for the climax of Cuphead's story. After collecting all soul contracts from the runaway debtors across the first two islands, Cuphead and Mugman return to the Devil's Casino. There, King Dice stops them, saying their success has caused him to lose a bet. In retaliation, he sets up an extended casino-style battle. After defeating King Dice, the brothers confront the Devil, who tries to tempt them by inviting them to join him if they turn over the soul contracts. If the player chooses to do so, Cuphead and Mugman are transformed into the Devil's demonic lackeys, and the game ends. If they refuse, the Devil becomes furious and battles them. Cuphead and Mugman defeat the Devil, incinerate the contracts, and return home. The former debtors honor the brothers for their heroism as everyone celebrates.

Reader's Guide

Inkwell Isle Three is the final world in Cuphead. It is accessible only after clearing Inkwell Isles One and Two. The island houses the final two bosses: King Dice and the Devil. Unlike earlier bosses, these two lack a simple difficulty mode. Defeating King Dice is required to progress to the Devil. The Devil fight has three phases. After completing a level, players are ranked with a grade based on performance, determined by time taken, hit points left post-battle, number of parried attacks, and number of times part of the super meter was used, in addition to the level difficulty. The levels are accessible through a top-down overworld perspective, each with its own secret areas. The game does not have a rigid narrative structure, but the plot concludes here with two possible endings based on the player's choice when confronting the Devil.
